In a marble layer from Hintertux south to the Spannagelhaus lies the Spannagel cave system with its numerous natural wonders.
The entrance to the cave was discovered in 1919 by Alois Hotter, the then owner of the Spannagelhaus hut, and exploration of the cave began around 1960. In 1964, this unique cave and its
surroundings were placed under nature conservation.
Thanks to the private initiative of the hut tenant Josef Klausner (1974-2003), part of the cave was opened to visitors in the entrance area on July 1, 1994. Guided tours of the unique
marble show cave take place all year round:
